Anti-Inflammatory Drugs Ease Depression

New research suggests that nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), along with antidepressants, may help ease depressive symptoms. After reviewing 14 trials that looked at the effects of anti-inflammatory drug treatment, researchers found patients with depression have a better response to antidepressants, without greater side effects, with the additional use of NSAIDs.

In total, the study looked at 6,262 adults with depressive symptoms or depression. Study authors, led by Ole Kohler, MD, of Aarhus University Hospital, Risskov, Denmark, say evidence suggests there may be a link between depression and inflammation. Most of the studies the researchers analyzed were small and lasted a short time, and also “tended to exaggerate treatment effects.” However, the researchers write specific anti-inflammatory drugs showed promise.
