Founded in 1998, Segal Institute for Clinical Research was created as a division
of Compass Health Systems,
a multi-specialty group practice.
Compass Health Systems is the largest provider of mental health services in each
of the communities where its practices are located. Compass Health Systems is currently operating in clinics, nursing
homes, hospitals and partial hospitalization programs throughout South Florida, South
Carolina, and Colorado. In 2008, the Compass clinicians rendered approximately 300,000
patient visits. Around 230,000 visits were conducted in South Florida, 37,000 in Colorado,
and 3,500 in South Carolina. The
Compass Health Systems database has grown to over 150,000 patients. The Compass
network is comprised of approximately 50 clinicians, including psychiatrists, internists,
advanced registered nurse practitioners (ARNPs), psychologists, social workers and
specialized counselors.
Central Nervous System (CNS) and Addiction:
Dr. Scott Segal, co-founder of Segal Institute and sole founder of
Compass Health Systems,
is Principal Investigator for several of Segal Institute's trials. Board-Certified
in Adult Psychiatry and Board-Certified in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Dr. Segal
has conducted approximately 300 multi-centered, Phase I-IV clinical studies in outpatient,
inpatient, sleep laboratories, and nursing home settings since 1998. Dr. Segal's
research is conducted throughout South Florida in the North Miami, Hollywood, and
East Ft. Lauderdale site locations. Another Segal Institute Investigator practicing
in South Florida is Peter Ventre, MD. Dr. Ventre is Board-Eligible in Adult Psychiatry,
and conducts research in inpatient and outpatient clinics in West Ft. Lauderdale and
Hollywood, Florida. His extensive private practice, spanning all areas in psychiatry,
enables him to enroll in a myriad of clinical trials. Dr. Ventre's superior quality
and recruitment performance has enabled him to excel in the trials he has conducted
at Segal Institute. Additionally, Dr. David Flaherty, Board-Certified in Adult Psychiatry,
is an esteemed Principal Investigator on several Phase I-IV outpatient and inpatient
clinical trials. Dr. Flaherty has conducted over 150 clinical trials to date. The
South Florida Principal Investigators are able to conduct research studies involving
pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients in most settings. A team of
Subinvestigators, including psychiatrists and internists, support Segal Institute's
Principal Investigators in each of its locations.
Along with South Florida, Segal Institute for Clinical Research has research
offices in the Compass Carolina
Outpatient Clinic and on-site offices at Palmetto Lowcountry Behavioral Health in
Charleston, South Carolina. The Charleston team is proud to conduct inpatient and
outpatient CNS clinical trials since 2005. Principal Investigators Dr. Eduardo Cifuentes,
Board-Eligible in Adult Psychiatry, Dr. Steven Lopez, Board-Certified in Adult Psychiatry
and Board-Eligible in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and Dr. Calvin Jonathan Bosman
have cumulatively conducted over 70 different CNS clinical trials in adolescents and

Investigators. Dr. Chavoustie is Board-Certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and
has been Principal Investigator on over 40 clinical trials in general medicine and women's
health indications, 7 for which he has composed original protocols.
The Compass Health Systems'
robust patient pool serves as a tremendous source of recruitment for the trials
conducted by Dr. Chavoustie.
Segal Institute is also proud to have Dr. Natalie Hegedosh as one of its Investigators
for clinical trials in general medicine. Board-Certified in Family Medicine and Internal
Medicine, Dr. Hegedosh has served as an Investigator for over 20 Phase I-IV inpatient,
outpatient, and nursing home clinical trials.
Addiction:
In 2007, Segal Institute took an initiative in advancing its research in addiction.
With over 30 years of cumulative clinical practice experience treating patients suffering
from addiction, along with special waivers granted by the DEA to prescribe opiate addiction
treatment, Segal Institute for Clinical Research is a leader in addiction research. Segal
Institute Investigators have conducted trials in cocaine, opiate, and methamphetamine
addiction.
Recruitment:
The Segal Institute for Clinical Research recruitment team is capable of enrolling
subjects quickly and efficiently. Our alliance with Compass Health Systems is our most powerful method of enrolling
subjects. Other recruitment strategies include advertising efforts such as television,
radio, direct mail, mass transit, and newspapers. Another extremely effective strategy
for reaching enrollment goals is targeting specific populations, such as the Hispanic
residents in South Florida or the veterans in South Carolina. Segal Institute's
extensive HIPAA-compliant patient database has grown to over 20,000 patients.
