PTSD is treatable, and trauma survivors often recover and go on to live happy lives. But PTSD will not disappear on its own; it is a disease that requires medical attention.

Here are three common components of PTSD treatment:

Medication: The most common medications for PTSD are antidepressants known as selective serotonin uptake inhibitors (SSRIs), but other medications can help as well.

Talk therapy: Talk therapy is often quite helpful for alleviating PTSD symptoms. One type that is particularly effective is called cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), which aims to change destructive thinking patterns.

Other treatments: Acupuncture, yoga, biofeedback and meditation may help ease PTSD symptoms. Survivors groups, some for PTSD generally, some for particular traumas, can help greatly.
