Vaginal infections cannot always be prevented. But here are some steps you can take to improve your overall vaginal health:
- Keep your genital area clean. Washing the outside of your vagina and bottom on a daily basis is highly recommended, and try to use a milder type of soap. After going to the bathroom, the correct way to wipe this area is beginning from the front of your body toward the back, not the other way.
- Keep your genital area cool and refreshed. Heat attracts bacteria. Therefore you might want to avoid very tight underwear and clothes that don’t leave space for air. It would also be good to avoid clothes made with synthetic fibers like rayon and polyester; these materials can trap heat. The ideal types are cotton or cotton-crotch underwear.
- Don’t keep on wet bathing suits or gym clothes after an exercise. Bacteria thrive in wet places, too!
- Don’t douche. Putting water or other products into your vagina can remove some of the normal bacteria that are there to fight infections.
- Change underwear on a daily basis. This keeps germs from getting too near your vagina.
- Drink liquids. This helps by washing out your urinary tract, preventing further infections. You can tell if you are drinking enough liquids from the color of your urine. It should be light yellow or almost clear.
- Avoid scented hygiene products. Example: bubble bath, sprays, scented pads, and scented tampons.
