Schizophrenia is a debilitating psychiatric disorder with symptoms like hallucinations, delusions, paranoia, and disorganized thinking. But there are multiple forms of the disease which vary from person to person. Here are three common types of schizophrenia:

  • Paranoid Schizophrenia: This is the most common form of schizophrenia. People with paranoid schizophrenia believe that actually benign people or situations are dangerous or menacing. These beliefs can be very powerful and seem real. It can even lead someone to act irrationally or violently.
  • Catatonic Schizophrenia: It can be characterized by disturbance of movement. Catatonic schizophrenia can cause odd behaviors such as:
    • Sitting or standing in strange positions
    • Allowing to pose your limbs in odd positions
    • Sitting without moving for long periods of time
    • Being very active but with no purpose
  • Disorganized Schizophrenia: People who have disorganized schizophrenia often show strange speech and behavior. Examples of disorganized speech include:
    • Making up words
    • Impulsively rhyming words
    • Speaking nonsensically

Examples of disorganized behavior includes:

  • Repeating the same activity over and over
  • Repeating precisely what someone else did
  • Acting inappropriately in public, e.g. urinating on a street corner
