5 Myths Behind Yeast Infections

  1. The presence of yeast always indicates a yeast infection:

Yeast usually live within the vagina in small numbers and has a protective role against bacteria. A yeast infection happens when the population of yeast in the vagina has greatly increased.  Therefore if those numbers increase, an infection can develop.

  1. Feminine deodorants and perfume keep the vagina clean and healthy

Many women falsely believe that douching, the use of feminine products such as deodorants and perfumes, will prevent them from getting a yeast infection. The truth though is that such products could even cause an infection. These products contain chemicals and could be responsible for the imbalance of the pH of your vagina. An imbalance in the pH creates a desirable environment for bacteria and therefore an infection could develop.

  1. Yeast infection is a sexually transmitted disease (STD)

Although it is possible to transmit a yeast infection through sexual contact, it is rare, and according to doctors, yeast infections are not considered a STD.

  1. Only adults get yeast infections

Yeast lives in everyone’s body, from infants to adults, and the causes of an infection are the same for every age. Even young girls can get a yeast infection, and they can be a cause for diaper rash in babies.

  1. Men do not get yeast infections

Although yeast infections are rare in men, according to studies, up to 15% of men experience some of the symptoms of a yeast infection. Such symptoms are: itchiness, redness, a rash, or burning. What could also be the cause of an infection in men is having unprotected sex with a woman who has an active yeast infection.
