10 Tips for a Happier, Healthier New Year

  1. Take an outdoor walk at least once a week. A regular dose of nature and physical activity is sure to elevate your mood. Research shows that outdoor walks can actually alleviate some symptoms of depression.
  2. Keep a journal. Writing out your thoughts is a great way to empty your mind of negative energy and to reflect on what’s going on in your life.
  3. Make bedtime one hour earlier. It’s hard to be happy when you’re not getting enough sleep. You’re more prone to be irritable and stressed when you’re overtired.
  4. Try something new. Shake things up! Visit a place you’ve never been before or pick up a new hobby.
  5. Unplug. Cut down the amount of time you spend near screens like your phone, computer, and TV, at least for a little while. Being constantly connected can wear down on your peace of mind.
  6. Try out therapy. If you think your psychological well-being could benefit from talking to a professional, seek out a therapist. Getting some support is nothing to be ashamed of.
  7. Create a feel good playlist. Collect a group of go-to songs that will lift you up whenever you’re feeling down. Music can be transformative, releasing some of the pressure that builds up in your mind and body.
  8. Dial back your alcohol drinking. Long term heavy drinking means big trouble for your mental health. If you’re stressed, turn to exercise or relaxation instead of alcohol.
  9. Focus on your strengths and values. When you feel uncertain, small, or threatened, consciously remind yourself of your best qualities and what you value most, like your family or your career.
  10. Take a break! Don’t be so hard on yourself this year. Do what you can and accept what you can’t.
